WITCH SPEAK MARCH 2017
Hello my darlings!
When I think of March, I think of the tattvic tides. Tattvas, also spelled Tattwas, is a Sanskrit term for shaped symbols that represent the elements. Earth is a square, water is a crescent, fire is a triangle, air is a circle, and Ether/quintessence is an oval. Traditionally, the cycle of five tattwas marks the 24 hours of a day. In other words the energy of any given hour(s) is influenced by the tattvas of said hour, in the exact same way a planet influences the energy of the hour.
Witches sing, “Air, I am. Fire, I am. Water, Earth, and Spirit I am,” because we hold true that we are composed of all five energies. Our symbol, the pentagram has four connected points representing fire, water, earth, and air. The center of the pentagram is a circle representing ether/quintessence. Some of us are more earth than air, some of us are more water than fire, some of us are more fire than earth, and some of us are all air, and it goes on and on. Our combinations are infinite, as wonderfully diverse as nature herself. Where we have the most planetary energy is both our greatest strength and our greatest weakness. Everything contains it’s opposite and together the opposites make a whole. You can’t let go of one piece of a whole, without weakening the entire whole.
I was originally taught in New Age groups that if I didn’t like something about myself to release it. Without fail, what I didn’t like about myself was an uncomfortable feeling, such as rage, jealously, or resentment. So I got busy doing the work of releasing. I tried, oh Lady how I tried, but it didn’t work. And when I told my teacher I was trying, he said, “Don’t try. Do.” I felt like such a loser, because I really had been doing; affirmations, burnings, chanting, praying and nothing was working. Clearly I was never going to be spiritual; I just wasn’t good enough. I ran into person after person after person on the path of the sacred, and the honest ones would tell me they were having the same difficulty releasing their “bad.” It seemed to me if so many of us were having what they called “negative feelings,” and if this was in fact the human condition, then there had to be right use for those feelings.
The dark night of my weary, researching soul gave way to a spectacular dawn after reading Starhawk. She wrote (and I’m paraphrasing) everything contains its opposite, not in terms of opposing, but in terms of compliment. What I didn’t know then was that I was now on the path of transformation.
Anyone who’s ever worked with me knows that I am about honoring feeling, no matter what that feeling is. I’ve had people say to me, “I’m angry how do I get rid of it?” To which I answer, “Bring it into body, put your face on it, and ask her what’s wrong.” Feeling is a direct line into what’s going on; feeling is to final clarity what gravity is to earth. The guides have told me repeatedly that there is no such as a negative feeling; it is our judgment of them that gives them their sting. (This does not mean there aren’t negative actions but that’s another post) Conscious transformation of feeling is psychic alchemy. We hold our opposites, one presses against the other, and new space, new being is born. If you feel weak, feel it on one side of your heart. On the other side feel strength; a time when you knew you were strong. Feel the strength and the weakness press hard against each other. Don’t let them merge; this is not about merging. In a few minutes, you’ll feel something give. When you open your eyes, you probably won’t have words for the experience, because it’s one of those mysteries that words cannot adequately describe. But, oh baby does it feel good! What that good feeling is, is balance; a balance that is unique unto you. By engaging the feelings, as they were meant to be engaged, you orchestrated an alchemical change and brought yourself into balance. Witches hold true that the Goddess lives around and within us. Alchemical change awakens/strengthens the sacred, the divinity within.
On the Vernal equinox, (Monday, March 20th) the hours of light and dark are equal. Light and dark, being opposites, one cannot exist and is fairly useless, even harmful, without the other. Metaphorically, at Vernal Equinox the tattvic tide breaks through the ice on the river. Think of the river as your feelings. The tattvic tide breaks through the frozen river so water can run free. You may be feeling pretty antsy this month. The energy of March is naturally volatile and at the same time the current planetary line-up is pushing you to find out who you really are, and what makes you genuinely happy. We’re talking deep happiness, living from your authenticity, and refusing to sacrifice who you are to make another feel better about themselves.
When the tattvic tides hit, all that you’ve pretended is okay, or rationalized is okay,
is going to rear up and definitely not feel okay.
Uncomfortable as the feelings will/might be, take it for the gift they are. Feelings are the tools of transformation and your soul is the cruise director. Sit down. Breathe. Drop a root from the base of your spine deep into the earth and feel the rich emerald green of earth flow through you. Place the opposites on either side of your heart, feel the pressure, and allow your soul to do the rest. Like the Goddess, you change everything you touch, and everything you touch changes.
Live loud, love fierce, and suffer no fools. Kat
