Hello my darlings, Stephen Forrest writes: “The myth of the rugged, independent individual separate from everyone else has finally hit the wall. As we have seen, we are all in this together. Denying that reality simply no longer works in a practical way for anyone. Even money can’t keep anyone safe. Our anger with each other, our divisions, our brutal competitiveness, our sense that national boundaries reflect some immutable law of nature – all of that is collapsing right now before our eyes.” I agree with Stephen. To take it one step further.....we are living through Kali Yuga – the center no longer holds. The ideal of mankind (the rugged independent man separate from everyone else) is forced to give way to the reality of humanity - the interconnectedness of us all. It is not money or the economy or spirituality that connects us; it is the desire, the belief in the humane treatment of other human beings. We live in a world of, by, and for money. Every social injustice, every inequality, is rooted in an economic system that has destroyed the planet and reduced the value of human beings and human life less than zero. Covid-19 has hit people up the side of the head with the reality of our interconnection; an interconnection that absolutely has to be recognized and honored if we are to survive the current pandemic and the ones that are coming. Clearly the global economy is interconnected, clearly the health of all of us is interconnected. What’s terrifying the 1 percent, the elites, is more and more of the population has had it with an economic system that works for a few and keeps the rest of us on our knees. If money has no value, then the rich are no longer rich. If money has no value, then the rich no longer have power over federal policies that shape our lives. The people will not live by your leave. The deep cracks and fissures in the way we live, are forcing us to take stock, and come up with something better. Something humane; deeply, profoundly humane. We are not on the planet to be more spiritual, we are on the planet to learn what it is to be humane. Yes, spiritually is part of the process but being more spiritual is not the end goal; embodied spirituality is. To be truly spiritual you have to be dead, without a body. What makes human beings unique is body; we experience all life through the skin. To sacrifice the understanding, the knowing, that can only be had in body, for spirit makes no sense. It’s also the thrust of organized, patriarchal religion. Embodied spirituality is what the humane act looks like. The nurses, the doctors, the EMT”s, the firefighters, the police, the truckers, the people working at the grocery store, delivery men and women, caretakers, neighbors buying groceries and leaving them on the steps of the elderly. None of these people are doing what they do for the money. They’re doing it because this is who we are. We are Humanity rising. Think about it, dream it, imagine it; a world rooted in the soil of kindness and compassion. Tangible, pragmatic, heart felt. These days I’m feeling strapped to the seesaw of enraged, scared, and all pervading powerlessness. Feelings do not create your reality, unless you deny them, in which case they find a home in your shadow and fester into control. Every feeling has right use. How you know it’s right use is if it serves the interconnectedness of all things, if it serves love. That is how we begin to create a new world, a humane world, not as ideal, not as utopia, but as reality. Live loud, love fierce, and suffer no fools. Kat xoxox
